RDS K-12: We Can
Redwood Day School, a respected Kindergarten through eighth grade independent school, is creating the very best Upper School in the San Francisco Bay Area. We are pleased to announce that RDS will enroll a ninth grade Upper School class in the fall of 2009.
The confidence with which we declare this goal is as reasonable as it is ambitious. Already, we have the highest caliber faculty and administration, innovative and challenging curricula designed especially for all types of learners. Our mission to cultivate an intimate, diverse community where children develop inquisitive minds, build confidence in their individual gifts, and contribute as responsible members of society is a bold and strategically determined vision for our future.
We have found that the economic, demographic and market conditions favor a new independent non-denominational school. In researching other independent schools in the East Bay, we find there are very few expected incremental enrollment seats projected at comparable local independent schools (2006-2011).
RDS Upper School will offer a college and life preparatory education that differs significantly from other local independent schools. In RDS’s distinctive way, the Upper School will focus on intellectual rigor, values, individual achievement and working with others. We envision an Upper School that grows out of the tried and true tenets of the current K–8 curriculum.
The Upper School is distinguished by its emphasis on writing, reading, critical thinking, interdisciplinary and experiential education. As a means to this goal, the curriculum will provide students with a broad base of knowledge in English, history, science, math, foreign language, and fine arts. In a culture that fosters participation, collaboration, exploration of ideas, and discourse, Upper School students develop intellectual maturity and form leadership skills that empower them to have an impact on the larger world.
Ten years of significant due diligence has been done in the search for an Upper School site. Over a dozen locations have been examined, and serious negotiations have taken place.
Currently, RDS is in negotiation for acquisition of a magnificent 25-acre campus, located 10 minutes from the Sheffield Campus in Oakland. It is historically a place of learning, and lends itself to a phased building program.
What will it take to fulfill the dream?
Without question, strong financial leadership is presently our most fundamental and urgent need. Redwood Day School is now asking its’ most capable and supportive friends—who understand and have perhaps experienced the life-changing power of this extraordinary community—to make the gift of a lifetime.
