Opprtunities to Be Involved
in Your Child's School

Volunteering and Sponsored Committees

Volunteers on these committees support the school during the day, on a weekend, or even in a few minutes during the morning.

Art

Under the guidance of the school’s art instructors, parent volunteers work in the art room on a scheduled basis and assist students with class activities. Parent volunteers also provide support as needed for special activities such as the annual spring art shows.

Book Fair

The Book Fair runs for one week in November. A wide range of books is available for all ages, and shoppers can buy books for themselves, for the library, and for classroom use. Events associated with the Book Fair include the middle school Book Bug Boogie, author visits, and a teacher preview. Volunteer activities include event planning, set up and take down, decorations, cashiering, and promotion.

Caring

The Caring committee is a group of Redwood Day School parents who volunteer to help out when any family/member of the Redwood Day School community-at-large is in crisis or transition and needs some extra support such as meals, carpooling, grocery shopping, etc. By having a large group of volunteers, the responsibilities can be shared throughout the year, so no one person gets overburdened.

Faculty & Staff Appreciation

The Faculty Appreciation Committee provides snacks for faculty and staff and organizes monthly luncheons. The committee provides faculty and staff with birthday cards, gift certificates and tickets to local cultural events.

Fall Picnic

The Fall Picnic is an annual social event held in October. Volunteers are involved in the event planning, publicity, phone calling, setting up and cleaning up, organizing food and games, and so on.

Generations' Day

This event, held on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, is run by the Development Office, but is entirely staffed by Redwood Day School parents. Volunteer duties include set up, clean up, greeting guests, serving brunch, taking pictures, and more.

Hospitality

Chairs coordinate with the Parents’ Association, Admission Director, and Division Directors to host events. Volunteer duties include providing set up and clean up of snacks, coffee, tea and goodies for back-to-school nights, art shows, science fairs and more.

Library

Under the guidance of the school librarian, volunteers assist students with library activities (usually during their child(ren)’s library hours) and help maintain library materials on a scheduled basis during the year.

Lice Busters

The Lice Busters committee works to reduce lice exposure at Redwood Day School by providing information to parents and conducting grade-level inspections at school.

Office Support

Providing assistance to the front office or Parents' Association as needed, activities for these volunteers may involve answering phones, typing, word processing, database input, copying, collating, labeling, envelope stuffing, or other general office duties.

Prism (“Diversity”)

The Prism committee consists of members of our community who gather to discuss diversity at Redwood Day School and the world at large. Prism holds events to bring the community together to increase understanding, to enhance the richness of differences, and to promote the beauty of our similarities. Activities include book clubs, parent's nights, and communication and distribution of information to faculty, students, parents and prospective families.

Speakers Series

This committee hosts several focused lectures and discussion groups throughout the year. Programs are geared toward parenting children at various ages and grade levels. Opportunities for being involved include scheduling speakers, publicity, phone calling, record keeping, planning evening meals, and some clean up.

Room/Grade-Level Parents

Room parents and grade-level parents coordinate with the individual classroom teacher(s) or grade level advisors for specific class events such as field trips and parties, and with the Parents’ Association in communicating school-wide events and information. There are generally 2-5 roomparents or grade-level parents per class.
