Nature Program
Redwood Day has two wonderful and very different garden areas within the Middle School campus. The main garden is located in the heart of the MS campus looking out past the turf and towards the park. This is the working garden. Teachers are offered this area as a place to nurture theme gardens such as a wheat field to experience bread production from the seed on up, a rice field to experience the challenge of growing your own crop as part of Social Studies Unit, a Spanish Garden with a delicious variety of produce is grown to be prepared and enjoyed by the entire class. These raised beds are also available for math and science lessons that can be tracked over time. Composting will of course be a part of this garden on an ongoing basis.
The second garden area is a jewel in the rough located on the side of the MS Multi-purpose Room. It is a small, 10 x 30 foot, slice of creativity waiting to happen. This area hosts our Friday’s Growing Up GREEN Activity Group. This is the first year that this area has been open to this activity and already the creative juices are flowing! There are plans for the ever popular CD trees, mosaic flamingos, student created art installations, a small winding dry river, native plantings, student seating and what ever else lives in the creative minds of your Middle School child waiting for an outlet such as this!
Having two such diverse areas to garden provides our students with both a great chance for structured observation as well as an outlet for total creative expression.
