Middle School Athletics

Middle school is a time when students are testing and expanding the limits of their cognitive, social and physical abilities. There is no better place where all of these come together than on the athletic field. At Redwood Day School, students can pursue athletics in our after-school sports program.

RDS middle school students can play on our co-ed cross country, flag football, soccer, track-and-field, volleyball and ultimate Frisbee teams, or the boys' and girls' basketball teams. The program has several goals designed to meet the developmental needs of middle school students:

  • To provide a physical, yet safe, outlet for students who find joy in expressing themselves athletically
  • To teach students about the concepts of teamwork, commitment, and perseverance
  • To develop and improve athletic skills and abilities
  • To provide a level of athletic competitiveness that is both developmentally healthy and appropriate
  • To instill a love for the game

Our athletic philosophy seeks to enrich the emotional, mental, and physical well-being of all student athletes. RDS follows a “no-cut” policy so teams are open to all middle school students providing an opportunity for as many athletes as possible. Students of varying abilities participate and enjoy their involvement while coaches emphasize values of sportsmanship, teamwork, integrity, commitment and self-discipline. Students remain academically eligible by maintaining a consistent and positive effort in their classes.

Redwood Day School participates in a league with other East Bay middle schools. Most sports involve a twice-a-week commitment which includes practice and a meet or game. Volunteer parent drivers generously spend their time transporting our teams and providing snacks. Over the years, those serving as coaches have been parents, teachers and administrators—everyone who gets involved has a great time working with the kids.
